Sports Leaders UK was established 30 years ago with the aim of guiding and encouraging students, through the medium of sport, to develop leadership, planning and organisational skills, increase knowledge of health and well being amongst young people as well as develop interpersonal skills and confidence. These elements fit the MultiSports ethos of learning skills for life very well and the Sports Leaders program has proved to be an effective progression from team building games for our older students. Principal Helen Girdler says " We have seen how our sports leader graduates have entered College and University life with a confident approach to interviews, and an appreciation of the benefits of being able to organise themselves in a way that is proficient and not overwhelming. This is a valuable life skill!"
Sports Leadership courses provide the ideal starting point for candidates aged 13 years and over to develop these skills whilst under the direct supervision of their tutor in a friendly and supportive environment.
At MultiSports Amersham & Chorleywood we run open Sports Leaders courses for students aged 13+. The courses run within our school term on Saturday afternoons from 2pm - 5pm. To complete level 1 and 2 and attain the nationally recognised qualification takes between 3 and 6 school terms. The courses are modular and as such students can begin the course at anytime throughout the year - If they have participated in an introductory course at their secondary school they will also be able to carry this work over.
The courses are mostly practical and learning is through group discussion and practice with peers, leading on to assisting a coach and delivering brief warm up sessions and activities with younger students. There is a small amount of written work - alternative methods of recording are available to those students with Dyslexia or similar if necessary. Class sizes are capped at 16 students.
Throughout the course students will also participate in the 18 sports a year that run at the school, giving them plenty of exposure to a wide variety of sport, as well as broadening the possibilities for them to continue to be more active and health conscious young adults.
Applicants do not need to be particularly sporty to benefit from this course and no previous experience is necessary. It is not competitive and it's not selective. Essentially, the course is both energetic and fun and the student's efforts are recognised with certification of a recognised qualification upon completion.

Matthew Parker "I am now at Exteter University in my 3rd year studying History. The sports leaders qualifications allowed me to coach at a local tennis club whilst I was studying for my A levels and has given me many job opportunities to support myself since starting university. Mostly, I feel the course has given me a sense of confidence in dealing with responsibility." Sept 17
